Type of Travel

Pre-Plan with Agencies

To make the most of the trip, travel operators can assist with finding great holiday packages and making ideal accommodation and transport arrangements. A tour guide may also be helpful, but it is easy enough to navigate alone because English is the main medium of communication. Local people are welcoming and very willing to help.

Hotel Information

There are many accommodation options including five-star hotels and smaller lodges and villas. For cultural immersion or more budget-friendly options, cottages at local homes or Airbnb options are available.

Least Favorite

Public Transportation

The public transportation system in towns and cities is dominated by commuter omnibus vehicles known locally as kombis. These operate on a fill-as-you go arrangement, so there is no scheduling involved. This can make it difficult to plan trips.

Cities

In some cities like Harare, the CBD district can be very busy and the sidewalks packed with a variety of goods for sale. Some urban roads have potholes, while many rural roads are not yet tarred.

Planning Your Trip

Time allocation and itinerary suggestion

Harare is roughly in the northeast of the country. It is an excellent place to arrive initially and used as a base for further travel. Many tourists also opt to start off in Victoria Falls and then progress to other parts of the country.

To cover most of the main tourist points of interest, a five-day trip, at least, is a good idea. This allows a day or two in the capital and seeing the nearby sights, 2-3 days in Victoria Falls and Hwange National Park, and some extra days for other sights, travel, and rest.

Local tourist agencies also offer one-day sightseeing tours to other points of interest near and around the main cities.

Malaria precautions such as tablets are important as some of the areas in northern Zimbabwe are malaria risk areas.

Zimbabwe has enjoyable tropical weather, and the winters are not too extreme. The rainy season occurs between November to March. Travel year-round is possible, but the drier winter months from April to October might be the best option.

Budget

Budget recommendations will vary depending on the preferred accommodation and travel options. USD$1,000 for a 5-day trip per individual is a moderate estimate.

Getting Here

Zimbabwe has three main airports that receive international flights. These are the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, which is the busiest airport in the country and is located in the capital Harare; the Victoria Falls International Airport in the town of Victoria Falls; and the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport in the second largest city called Bulawayo.

Many international airlines fly into Zimbabwe including South African Airways, British Airways, and Ethiopian Airlines, to name a few.

Flights into Zimbabwe may be direct from destinations such as the UK or have layovers at nearby airports such as O. R. Tambo International Airport in South Africa or the Dakar International Airport in Senegal.

Safety & Security

Zimbabwe is a generally peaceful and safe country. Tourists and business people from all over the world travel to Zimbabwe frequently. The people are warm and ready to help newcomers, but caution is required as in any other new environment.

When moving around in a car, it is advisable to keep the doors locked, and especially at night. Picking up hitchhikers is not recommended in certain areas. When leaving the car, valuables left behind must be hidden out of sight.

Visitors should exercise vigilance and caution during election periods and avoid areas where there are protests and strikes happening.

Getting Around

The fastest way to travel between the busiest hubs of Harare, Bulawayo, and Victoria Falls is by air. Fastjet, Air Zimbabwe, and South African Airways are some of the airlines that operate these routes. Flying times for these routes are not more than an hour for direct flights.

Car rental companies are numerous, and this is a great option for traveling within Zimbabwe. When traveling between major cities, luxury coach buses are also available. Within the cities and towns, the easiest way to get around is by taxi or private car. There are a few local taxi apps similar to Uber which are slowly gaining ground including the Vaya app.

Tour guides are available and can help tourists with getting around. The driving distance to major points of interests and sites across the country is at most 8 hours from Harare. From Victoria Falls in the north to the Beitbridge border in the south, the driving distance is approximately 12 hours.
